Pretty River Academy is a fully accredited, preschool through twelfth grade school. We are located in a natural wetland park which becomes the genesis of your child’s life long respect for nature and the environment.

Your child will benefit from small class sizes and an experienced teaching staff in our PreK, Junior and Senior Kindergarten program. We cannot stress enough the importance of completing the three-year kindergarten cycle. Our Reggio inspired approach brings a child to knowledge rather than bringing knowledge to a child. Each and every skill mastered is a building block for the next skill. These building blocks are very important to the foundation of a child’s lifelong learning journey. Our three-year kindergarten cycle provides students with the time to build a solid foundation to support whole-student success in elementary school and beyond.

Program Statement

Pretty River Academy’s (PRA) Early Years program recognizes that your child comes to school with pre-existing gifts to be nurtured.  Our four foundational principles are active learning, exploration, play and inquiry. Children and their families are active participants in all aspects of the program. We follow the Reggio Emilia approach where children help to lead their own learning, to understand the way they learn, and begin to love learning.

We observe and report how learning unfolds for each child, preparing the foundation for them to strive in the next stages of elementary school learning.

Daily play and learning blocks are designed to promote the foundations of belonging, well-being, engagement and expression in children. Goals and expectations integrate the six guiding principles of “ELECT” (Early Learning for Every Child Today).

Early child development sets the foundation for lifelong learning, behaviour, and health. Partnerships with families and communities strengthen the ability of early childhood settings to meet the needs of young children. Respect for diversity, equity, and inclusion are prerequisites for honouring children’s rights, optimal development, and learning.

A Co-Created Curriculum Supports Early Learning

Play is a means to early learning that capitalizes on children’s natural curiosity and exuberance. Knowledgeable, responsive educators are essential.

Pretty River Academy recognizes that development is staggered in the early years and adapts to the appropriate stage for each child when indulging their capabilities and curiosities. Daily and hourly they try new things and explore new ideas, all while learning and developing at their own pace.

All children are born with creativity, potential, and a deep curiosity. Fostering confidence in the child’s intention and desire at this age is critical to life-long success. Our approach employs an emergent curriculum that is devised individually from the children’s interests. This approach allows each child to develop an understanding of their world and their place within it. The goal is to cultivate within each child a lifelong passion for learning and exploration.

In our play-based learning center, Pretty River Academy provides a safe, caring and healthy environment for our children. We focus on a sense of belonging, making friends and interacting with their educators.

We understand that each child’s development differs according to family, community and life experiences. In each case, we aim to integrate all areas of the child’s development into our program.

Our goals for children are consistent with the Ontario Ministry of Education pedagogy:

Class Sizes

Pretty River Academy is a licenced Child Care Facility. In accordance with the Child Care and Early Years Act, 2014 (CCEYA) the staff to student ratio is one staff to eight students. There is a maximum of 16 children.

Uniform

PreK, Junior and Senior Kindergarten students wear uniforms.
