The learning environment at Pretty River Academy focuses on the principle of taking young people beyond the classroom and challenging them to change their world. Since 1998, Pretty River Academy has fulfilled its mission of developing students of character by promoting academic excellence, self-confidence, leadership, and independent thinking in an enriching, supportive environment. This environment ensures our students’ success, preparing them for leadership at university and beyond. Small class sizes and a low student/teacher ratio result in a superior academic program, however Pretty River Academy is about more than academics.
We have an array of co-curricular clubs, opportunities in the arts, athletic teams in a variety of sports, and extensive community activities ensuring Pretty River Academy’s students are well-rounded individuals. Pretty River Academy believes in the importance of contributing to society and from a young age, our students learn the importance of giving back to their communities at local, national and international levels.
At Pretty River Academy the majority of classrooms have a southern exposure with a view of Cranberry Marsh. Studies have shown that people with a view of natural spaces have experienced significantly less frustration and more enthusiasm towards their work. (American Psychological Society, 1993). Students and staff at the Academy benefit from this positive working environment, creating a happy place to be.
Each year at Pretty River Academy students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 write and present an original speech. The ability to deliver your thoughts and ideas clearly and confidently to an audience, large or small, is considered one of the most challenging and fear-inspiring experiences that people may gain throughout their lives.
Pretty River Academy's robotic team participates in the First Lego League (FLL) program. FLL is an international organization that promotes STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math). The program has been designed for students aged 9 to 14. It is a fun, hands-on program that allows students to use their creativity, problem-solving and critical thinking skills as they work as a team to design, build, and test a robot using Lego Mindstorms.
Beginning in Grade 4, students participate in our annual Science Fair. In preparation, students find a topic, think of an experiment, and write a detailed lab report. They put together a visually appealing board for their presentation to the judges. Some students move on to the Simcoe County Regional Science and Technology Fair, in Barrie, where they have the opportunity to win money, scholarships, and prestigious awards. At the regional fair, the top seven students move on to the Canada Wide Science Fair. Pretty River Academy has had several students participate in the Canada Wide Science Fair and one student has gone on to the international level.
The House System at Pretty River Academy is a way to organize and energize the entire school community. All students and faculty are assigned to a house of North, East, South, or West. House competitions and events are arranged throughout the year, allowing students to meet, support, mentor, play and work with students from all grades. The House with the most points at the end of the year wins the prized House Cup!
Pretty River Academy high school students are encouraged to participate in the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh Award. The award was founded by His Royal Highness, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, to encourage personal development and community involvement for young people.
Students in Grades 1 to 12 participate in an overnight camping experience to kick off the school year. Through team building and outdoor exercises, students learn to problem-solve, make social adjustments to new and different people, learn responsibility, and gain new skills to increase their self-esteem. All while creating a bond amongst students and teachers, that will carry them through their years. Students also participate in grade and curriculum appropriate end of year trips.

Living & Learning Green is a waste diversion program in partnership with Simcoe County. Pretty River Academy has been extremely successful with its waste diversion and we would like this to continue! Pretty River Academy is a ZERO WASTE school. This means that any waste brought into the school must be taken back home to be disposed of. This includes items such as plastic wrappers from snacks, broken pieces of equipment, or any items that are not on the Simcoe County recycling or composting lists.
